Andrea Apicella's current research focuses on the following areas:

Signal processing of EEG signals for emotion recognition and attention monitoring using Artificial Intelligence methods.
eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) approaches to provide explanations for the outputs of Artificial Intelligence systems.
Design and development of Machine Learning systems for analyzing the impact of nutritional factors on glycemic index in Type 1 diabetic patients.
Design and development of Machine Learning systems for measuring the level of student engagement through the acquisition of electroencephalographic signals. This aims to create a learning platform that is as customizable and adaptable to the user as possible automatically.
Applications of Artificial Intelligence methods in biomedical fields.

Additionally, he has been involved in:

Research activities on Privacy-Preserving Data Mining (PPDM) techniques applied to clustering algorithms, commissioned by the Regional Information Communication Technology Center (CeRICT) SCRL within the H2020 Project: SPECIAL (Scalable, Policy-awarE Linked Data arChitecture for Privacy, trAnsparency and compLiance).
Mobile device security based on multi-biometric authentication protocols. The research topic addressed the issue of Person Re-identification, which involves verifying that the same individual appears in multiple distinct sequences of images (e.g., videos).
Design and implementation of an iris recognition system on the Android mobile platform for research activities within the PRIN Project - 2015 Call entitled "COSMOS – ContactlesS Multibiometric mObile System in the wild".
